July 2, 2019 - Safaricom has announced the appointment of Michael Joseph as its interim CEO, following the death of Bob Collymore on Monday morning.

Joseph, a former CEO of Safaricom, will hold the position until the Safaricom Board makes a permanent appointment.

"The board is confident that during this transition, Mr Joseph will provide the necessary guidance and leadership to the company and its employees," Company Secretary Kathryne Maundu said in a statement.

Joseph, 67, has a wealth of experience in the telecommunications industry, having joined the Safaricom board in 2008 and serving as the CEO from 2000 to 2010.

During his tenure, he steered the company from a subscriber base of less than 20,000 to over 16.71 million subscribers.

Joseph holds a B. Sc. (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and is a member of the I.E.E.E. and I.E.E. (U.K.).
