On July 26, 2021, Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua appeared before Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi.
He was charged with money laundering, conspiracy to commit corruption, and conflict of interest, and denied all the allegations.
According to the prosecution, Gachagua and others fraudulently acquired Sh6 million in 2014 for the supply of dialysis machines to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital.
He was also accused of receiving Sh104 million from Bungoma County Government between 2015 and 2019 and engaging in transactions to conceal the money's origin.
Additionally, Gachagua was accused of receiving Sh7.3 billion between 2013 and 2020, knowing it was fraudulently acquired.
He was released on a Sh25 million bond or a cash bail of Sh12 million.
