On July 24, a secretly recorded video surfaced online showing three traffic police officers in Kenya soliciting bribes from motorists along Kangundo Road.

The video, which has gone viral, shows the officers ordering matatus to stop and then using civilians to collect bribes from the touts.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the three officers have been summoned by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) and are set to appear before it for hearing and subsequent action.

NPS IAU boss Mohammed Amin noted that the officers will face disciplinary action if found culpable of soliciting bribes, which is an offence.

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai had ordered the investigation and punishment of the officers, with transfer being a possible punishment in most cases.

Corruption in the Kenya Police Service has been a long-standing issue, with reports revealing that the institution loses Ksh 600 billion to corruption every year.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has admitted that Ksh 2 billion is lost to corruption every year, highlighting the severity of the issue.
