On July 23, 2021, during a Kenya dairy field day at the University of Embu, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya addressed dairy farmers, highlighting the need for new regulations to boost dwindling milk production.

According to Munya, the demand for milk outstrips production, and the new regulations will set a minimum return for each litre sold to benefit dairy farmers.

"With the new regulations in the dairy sector, production of milk will increase, fetching better prices for the benefit of dairy farmers," Munya said.

The CS noted that the regulation on minimum return will be reviewed every six months and that the dairy sector has the potential of exporting milk outside the country if managed well.

Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) Managing Director Magaret Rugut pointed out that Embu County is currently producing 45 million litres of milk, which is way below the demand in the county.

"The Dairy Board has trained over 100 farmers on dairy farming and this has improved the quality of milk in the county, we have even established a laboratory for milk examination and analysis in Embu," Rugut said.

The field day brought together partners in dairy farming, including the Agriculture and Food Authority, Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service, New KCC, and Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institution.
