Kenya's Olympic Hopes Hit a Roadblock as Malkia Strikers and Boxers Fall Short

Published on July 26, 2021, the Kenya national women's volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, kicked off their Tokyo Olympics campaign with a disappointing 3-0 set defeat to hosts Japan on Sunday, 25th July, at Ariake Arena.

The match saw Japan dominate the first two sets, winning 25-15 and 25-11 respectively. However, in the third set, Kenya showed signs of improvement, but ultimately lost 25-23.

Kenya's volleyball team is in a tough group alongside South Korea, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil. Their next match will be against South Korea on Tuesday, 27th July.

Meanwhile, Kenyan boxers Nick 'Commander' Okoth and Christine Ongare have been eliminated from the Olympics Games. Okoth lost to Mongolian Tsendbaater Erdenebat in a round of 32 bouts at the Kokugikan Arena on Saturday, 24th July.

Christine Ongare's Olympic journey came to an end on Sunday, 25th July, after losing to Filipino boxer Irish Magno in the women's flyweight boxing. Magno won the match with a unanimous decision of 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, and 30-26.
