Former Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti, pictured, has passed away at the age of 57 due to diabetes complications.
His son, Mutethia Irea, revealed that his father was in good health until the night before his death when he had to be rushed to the hospital.
At the time of his death, Mwiti was facing bankruptcy proceedings over a Sh6.1 million debt owed to Diamond Trust Bank (DTB).
The High Court had granted DTB a receiving order to protect Mwiti's multi-million shillings estate and commence bankruptcy proceedings against him.
On January 29, 2004, Mwiti incorporated Kenya Akiba Micro Financing Ltd, a company that lent money to entrepreneurs and had offices in Nairobi, Kitengela, Ongata Rongai, and Voi.
However, on November 2, 2005, the company's offices were raided by police and Central Bank of Kenya officials, who seized computers, customer files, and other office equipment.
After six years, Mwiti and the company were acquitted of any wrongdoing, with the court holding that they did not break any law.
On October 28, 2011, the court ordered the Central Bank of Kenya to release all the properties taken during the raid and to negotiate a suitable compensation with the company.
Mwiti also made headlines in February 2018 when he was charged with rape, which he denied.
