On May 21, 2021, Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o addressed a press briefing on the status of Covid-19 in the county, where he expressed his disappointment over the chaos that erupted at a funeral in Muhoroni.

The incident occurred during the burial of Lazarus Obera, a senior human resource manager at the county assembly, who had succumbed to Covid-19 a few weeks prior.

According to Nyong'o, the chaos started when a group of youth opposed to politicians speaking at the funeral began heckling, leading to a fight that resulted in the death of one of the youth.

"It is even more demeaning and disrespectful for any politician to orchestrate any form of violence at a funeral where we are expected to preach peace and condole with the bereaved," Nyong'o said.

He further alleged that some politicians had planned the violence, stating, "Inciting the youth to engage in violence is the most despicable form of politics that all Kenyans must discourage."

The incident has sparked calls for the arrest of those responsible, with Nyong'o urging the police to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
