This archive report was first published on 25 July 2021.

Kenya's economic woes and corruption have contributed to widespread anger, but the Judiciary is not the sole target of this frustration.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has faced criticism for not issuing a statement quickly enough after the arrest of two High Court judges, with some Kenyans expecting her to use specific words in her statement.

However, this expectation is a form of bullying, which undermines the principles of judicial independence.

As the new Chief Justice, Koome deserves time to implement her vision for the Judiciary, as long as it does not contravene the law.

Continued haranguing and vitriol towards her will only push her into a corner, compromising the independence of the Judiciary.
