Stock Your Fridge Like a Pro: 5 Essential Tips ¶
For many of us, shopping is a great way to unwind after a long day. However, the real challenge begins when we get home and have to unpack and store our groceries.
Properly storing your groceries can help extend their shelf life and prevent food waste. Here are five tips on how to stock your refrigerator effectively.
1. Store Dairy Products in the Coldest Part of the Fridge
Dairy products such as milk, yogurts, and cheese can go bad quickly if not stored properly. To give them a longer shelf life, keep them in the coldest part of the fridge, away from the door.
2. Keep Fruits and Veggies Fresh
Fruits and vegetables have the shortest shelf life due to their high water content. To keep them fresh for longer, store them in zip-locked bags and place them in the high-humidity drawer of your fridge.
3. Store Bread in the Freezer or Coldest Part of the Fridge
Once you open bread, it's best to store it in the freezer or the coldest part of the fridge to prevent it from going stale quickly.
4. Freeze Meat and Poultry
Meat and poultry should be stored in an airtight container or zip-locked bag and placed at the bottom compartment of the fridge to prevent juices from leaking and contaminating other foods.
5. Store Leftovers Properly
Leftovers should be stored in clean containers or wraps and refrigerated within two hours of being cooked and served. It's also a good idea to eat the oldest foods first to prevent food waste.
