Published on July 25, 2021, a corruption-related investigation led to the arrest of Nyeri MP, Charles Gachagua, from his home in Nyeri by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to his supporters, the arrest was a result of his association with Deputy President William Ruto, who they claim is being punished for his political stance.
Gachagua, an ardent supporter of DP Ruto, was on the forefront during the Kiambaa by-election last week where Njuguna Wanjiku of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) won.
He is expected to be charged on Monday following the corruption-related investigation, which is not the first time he has been grilled by the DCI over claims of money laundering amounting to hundreds of millions.
Gachagua has denied the claims, terming them political, and his lawyer, Wahome Gikonyo, said he was just picked and not told what he was being arrested for.
A section of his supporters held demonstrations soon after the dawn arrest and blocked the Nyeri-Nairobi road, terming the arrest as political due to the recent defeat of the Jubilee Party at the Kiambaa by-elections.
Police officers had a hard time restoring normalcy on the busy highway and could be seen clearing burning tyres.
