Published on July 24, 2021, a report by the Global Dashboard for Covid-19 Vaccine Equity highlighted the challenges facing Kenya's COVID-19 vaccination efforts.
The report noted that despite President Uhuru Kenyatta's assurance that 10 million adults would be vaccinated by December 2021, the country's vaccination rate remains slow, with only 1,670,941 people vaccinated by July 24, including 624,415 who had received their second jab.
According to the report, faster scaling up of manufacturing and sharing of vaccine doses with low-income countries could have added $38 billion (Sh4.112 trillion) to GDP forecast for 2021, if they had similar vaccination rates as high-income countries.
The report also warned that the high price per COVID-19 vaccine dose relative to other vaccines and delivery costs could put a huge strain on fragile health systems, undermine routine immunization, and cause alarming spikes in measles, pneumonia, and diarrhea.
