On July 1, 2019, Lamu West MP Stanley Muthama was arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and subsequently charged in an Eldoret Court for tax evasion.
According to the charge sheet, Mr. Muthama, jointly with others not before court, through Stansha Limited, allegedly evaded paying taxes from income derived from his business activities in Kericho, Kajiado, and Nakuru counties between 2013 and 2017.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) accused Mr. Muthama of failing to remit Sh487 million in taxes, leading to the tax evasion charges.
Mr. Muthama denied all 13 charges pressed against him, and his lawyer opposed his release on bail, citing concerns that he might skip court proceedings.
Eldoret Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa granted the accused a Sh3 million bond with an alternative Sh500,000 cash bail.
The case will be mentioned on July 15, 2019.
