July 23, 2021, marked a significant milestone for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party as a long-standing dispute over its ownership was finally resolved.
According to a legal document, Abdi Noor, the party's former chairman, had moved to court to challenge a decision made by the Registrar of Political Parties, claiming that it had unlawfully made changes to the party's National Executive Council (NEC) officials.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Noor indicated that he was satisfied with the gazette notice changing the party's leadership, effectively dropping his claim of ownership.
"The appellant is satisfied that the decision of the responded vide Gazette Notices Numbers 123, dated 29th January 2021, and Gazette Notice No. 0739 dated 19th March 2021 was lawful," read the document.
As a result of the resolution, all parties involved agreed to settle their own costs, bringing an end to the dispute that had threatened to nip the party's momentum in the bud.
Deputy President William Ruto, who is expected to lead the party in the upcoming 2022 elections, will likely feel buoyed by the win, which comes on the heels of the party's victory in the recently concluded Kiambaa by-elections.
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen celebrated the resolution, stating, "The small matter between Mr Abdi Noor Mohamed and UDAKenya has been resolved amicably."
