On July 20, 2021, a devastating tanker explosion occurred along the Kisumu-Busia highway, claiming the lives of 13 people and injuring dozens more.

Radio host Jalangó, also known as Jalas, was visibly shaken as he narrated the tragic story of the accident on his show on Kiss 100 FM.

According to Gem OCPD Mosera Chacha, the truck caught fire and exploded after one person opened a compartment to allow others to siphon fuel faster before the arrival of police.

Chacha explained that members of the public took advantage of the situation and started siphoning petrol from the tanker, which caused a spark and led to the explosion.

At least 30 people, including children, sustained burns in the accident and were rushed to Yala sub-county hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital.

As Jalas recounted the story, he broke down in tears, saying, "People were asleep and heard the explosion. Watu wamechomeka sana ushago kwetu vibaya sana."

His co-host, Kamene Goro, tried to comfort him as he struggled to continue with the show.
