On July 1, 2019, Kenya's hopes of advancing to the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 were dealt a significant blow after a 3-0 loss to Senegal at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.
Senegal's top-ranked team, led by forward Sadio Mane, dominated the match, with Mane scoring a penalty and a second goal in the second half after Kenya's Philemon Otieno was sent off for a second bookable offense.
Mane's first goal came in the 62nd minute, and he added another in the 71st minute, securing Senegal's spot in the last 16 as runners-up behind Algeria.
Algeria, who made 11 changes to their team, beat Tanzania 3-0 in Cairo to top Group C with nine points, while Senegal secured six points and Kenya three.
Kenya's goalkeeper, Patrick Matasi, made several crucial saves in the first half, including a penalty save in the 27th minute, but ultimately couldn't prevent the loss.
Despite the loss, Kenya still has a chance to advance as one of the four best third-placed teams, depending on the outcome of Group E and Group F matches on July 2, 2019.
