On July 19, 2021, ODM Leader Raila Odinga sounded the alarm over a disturbing trend of children going missing in Kenya, with some later being found abused, defiled, or murdered.
Speaking out, Raila urged the public to take responsibility for safeguarding children and protecting them from harm, emphasizing the need to end such horrific cases that have plagued the country.
His remarks came in the wake of a serial killer's arrest, accused of brutally murdering five girls after assaulting and defiling them, as well as a separate incident where a 20-year-old man confessed to killing 13 children, with the first murder committed when he was just 15.
‘I want to call upon the National Police Service to assure Kenyans that it is up to the task of protecting particularly children, girls and women. Police must assure Kenyans that an individual will not pluck and kill two, four or five children or girls before the ring is detected and crashed,’ Odinga stated.
He also called on the Judiciary to expedite justice in such cases, emphasizing the need for swift action to bring perpetrators to account.
Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai responded to concerns raised by the public, assuring that adequate security measures were in place to deal with the rampant cases of killings and kidnappings of children.
