On the eve of the Iddul Adha celebrations, July 19, 2021, the counties of Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir issued a joint communiqué to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

Health CECs from the three counties expressed concern over the need to observe the mitigation measures to stop the spread of Covid-19, citing the outbreak of the 3rd wave of the pandemic with the deadly Delta variant reported in Western, Nyanza, and Coastal regions.

According to the communiqué, the Muslim faithful with flu-like symptoms and fever should stay at home and not attend the Iddul Adha celebrations.

"Wearing of masks will be mandatory and the faithful should desist from handshake and hugging," the communique read.

Other measures included in the communique are keeping of social distancing during the Iddul Adha prayers, carrying of personal prayer mats, and avoiding crowding at mosque ablution blocks.

Roble Nunow, Health CEC of Garissa County, urged security personnel to strictly enforce the directives.
