On Sunday night, a devastating oil tanker accident occurred on the Kisumu-Busia road in Malanga, claiming the lives of 13 people.

According to Gem OCPD Moses Chacha, the incident happened when an oil tanker rolled after avoiding a head-on collision with an oncoming trailer carrying 20 tonnes of milk.

‘The trailer veered off the road to avoid plunging into the tanker, which was heading to Busia,’ Chacha explained.

However, the tanker hit the trailer and overturned, spilling petroleum products, including super petrol, onto the roadside.

‘The tanker hit the vehicle on the right rear side, resulting in it overturning on the extreme left side of the road,’ Chacha said.

As members of the public rushed to the scene, they began siphoning fuel from the tanker, which then burst into flames.

Chacha warned against rushing to accident scenes, citing the dangers of such incidents.
