Kenya marked a significant milestone in its fight against COVID-19 on July 17, 2021, with the highest number of recoveries since January this year, totaling 1,139. This brought the cumulative recoveries to 181,682.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the new recoveries alongside 723 new COVID-19 cases detected from a sample size of 6,881, raising the total caseload to 192,435. The country's positivity rate stood at 10.5 percent.

According to Kagwe, 1,150 people were admitted in various hospitals across the country, including 130 in the Intensive Care Unit. Unfortunately, six more patients succumbed to the virus, bringing the total fatalities to 3,760.

As of July 17, 2021, 1.6 million people had been vaccinated against the virus, with 581,003 receiving their second jab. Kenya is set to receive 1.76 million doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine from the United States government, officials confirmed.

Chairman of the COVID-19 vaccine Deployment Taskforce Willis Akhwale stated that talks with the United States administration were at an advanced stage for the delivery of the doses. US President Joe Biden had committed to donating the Pfizer vaccine to countries experiencing shortages in June 2021.
