Belgian football club KAA Gent has raised Sh5.7 million in less than 24 hours to support flood victims in southern Belgium.
The club, which signed Kenyan player Joseph Okumu from Elfsborg in Sweden for Sh448.4 million three weeks ago, decided to launch the fundraising campaign on July 17, citing that 'we are all affected in one way or another by the flood disaster.'
According to the club's website, many people in the city of Ghent want to contribute to the cause, which is why the city has launched a fundraising campaign to support the flood victims.
Belgium has declared July 18 a national day of mourning after floods killed at least 20 people in the western part of the country by July 16, with another 20 reported missing.
The heavy rainfall has caused the worst flooding in Belgium in over 200 years, with more than 21,000 people in the Wallonia region, where many residents speak French, left without electricity.
KAA Gent is set to start its Belgian Pro League campaign on July 25 against Sint-Truidense V.V.
