On July 17, 2021, the County Government of Kajiado proposed the Women Empowerment Fund Bill, which, if enacted, would provide grants to women in the county.
The bill, currently in the public participation stage, has garnered overwhelming support from local residents, who are eager to benefit from the funds.
According to Yvonne Tonkei, chairperson of the Kajiado County Gender, Tourism, Wildlife, Youth and Sports Committee, the main objective of the bill is to facilitate the growth and development of women in the county.
“The empowerment fund will receive monies appropriated through County Assembly grants, donations, and income generated from the fund,” Tonkei explained.
The fund will be used to train and build capacity of women to eradicate poverty, expand access to finance for women businesses and enterprises, and model an alternative framework in funding community-driven development.
Allocations will be limited to groups with a minimum of Sh100,000 and a maximum of Sh300,000, with a portion of the fund reserved for emergencies.
