On July 16, 2021, a group of Ugandan policemen were patrolling Lake Victoria when they attacked fishermen from Nambo and Honge beaches in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County.
According to Alfred Ochieng, the chairman of Nambo Beach, the Ugandan officers had attacked the fishermen and confiscated their two boats. The fishermen were then asked to board the Ugandan boat, which had one officer, and were told to row to Uganda's Sigulu Island.
However, the officer missed the direction to Sigulu Island and started asking the fishermen for directions. They directed him towards Honge Beach, where he was held and the Ugandan boat was confiscated.
Elly Masinde, the official from Honge Beach, said that the officer was in full Ugandan Army uniform and was rescued by officers from Usenge Police Station from an angry mob.
The incident comes barely a week after Siaya County Commissioner Mohammed Barre and Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda met with fishermen from the area to discuss security concerns.
"We have always requested the Kenyan Government to enhance patrols on the lake to protect us from such attacks but little is being done," lamented Masinde.
