On July 15, 2021, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held a high-level briefing on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), chaired by Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France.
Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Raychelle Omamo, delivered a statement at the briefing, commending Libya for its achievements in the peace process and urging the country to continue its national dialogue towards the upcoming elections.
She emphasized the importance of implementing the ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of foreign fighters and mercenaries, who pose a threat to peace in Libya and the Sahel region.
The Cabinet Secretary also called for the planning and implementation of a Demobilization, Disarmament and Reintegration programme in Libya and neighboring states, in collaboration with UNSMIL and regional organizations.
The briefing received a report from Ján Kubiš, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, and was addressed by His Excellency, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, Prime Minister of Libya.
