July 16, 2021, marked a contentious day in the Kiambaa parliamentary by-election as Kariri Njama, a Jubilee Party candidate, refused to concede defeat.
According to the electoral commission, John Njuguna Wanjiku of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) emerged victorious with 21,773 votes, while Njama garnered 21,263 votes.
However, Njama disputed the results, claiming that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) conspired with UDA agents to shortchange him.
At a press conference, Njama alleged that results from three polling stations were cooked and called for a recount of votes in Gachie, Kawaida, and Karuri polling stations.
“First and foremost I want to thank the people of the Kiambaa for the support and their votes. We won fair and square, but IEBC went to bed with our rivals,” Njama said.
He further stated, “I want to make it clear that I don’t agree with the results. There were many irregularities that must be addressed before we move on.”
Njama has since decided to seek justice in court, vowing not to let the IEBC make decisions for the people.
