On July 16, 2021, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) suspended vote tallying in the Kiambaa by-election following a dispute over the results.

The controversy erupted at Karuri Secondary School, where Jubilee candidate Kariri Njama accused the IEBC of rigging the election in favour of UDA's John Njuguna.

According to the IEBC, Njuguna was leading with 21,606 votes, while Njama had 21,151 votes after votes from 153 polling stations out of 154 had been tallied.

IEBC's Kiambaa returning officer, Peter Muigai, explained that the announcement of results was halted due to the absence of form 35 A from the remaining polling centre.

Heavy police presence was witnessed at the main tallying centre in Karuri Secondary school, while six other candidates, including Evans Wainaina of the People's Party of Kenya, were also vying for the seat.
