Published on July 16, 2021, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the results of the Muguga Ward by-election, which was conducted on Thursday.

Jubilee Party candidate Joseph Mung'ara Githinji emerged victorious, garnering 4,089 votes against United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Peter Thumbi's 4,062 votes.

The narrow margin of 27 votes separated the two candidates, with Githinji's win marking a significant victory for the Jubilee Party in the Muguga Ward.

UDA, a break-away faction of the ruling Jubilee Party, is led by Deputy President William Ruto, who is positioning himself for the 2022 presidential election.

However, the UDA had initially declared victory in the Muguga Ward by-election, with its leaders and agents celebrating the win among their supporters.

Meanwhile, in the Kiambaa parliamentary by-election, the IEBC suspended vote tallying on Friday morning following protests by Jubilee candidate Kariri Njama, who claimed the vote had been rigged in favor of his UDA competitor John Wanjiku.
