On September 3, 2018, a dramatic scene unfolded at Kedel Police Post in Homabay county, as two men arrived in a Probox at 9 pm, sparking a chain of events that would lead to a murder trial.
Police Constable Willy Okoti, attached to Mawego Police Station, was on duty that night and testified as the final prosecution witness in the four-day court session.
Okoti recounted how the driver of the Probox told him he had assisted a man who did not know the directions to the police post. The officer described the other man as shocked and confused, bleeding from the palm of his hands and knees.
According to Okoti, the man told him he was in Rongo at a hotel with Sharon Otieno when the governor's personal assistant asked them to board a vehicle to change hotels. They drove for about 300 meters before stopping, and the PA alighted to call two other people.
The man reported being threatened with death for investigating allegations that the governor had impregnated Sharon Otieno. Fearing for his life, he jumped out of a moving vehicle between Homa Bay town and Kendu Bay town and escaped.
Okoti made a brief report on the Occurrence Book number 09/03/09/2018, and later shared the OB extract with DCI detectives.
