Safaricom Expands into Ethiopia with New License

On July 14th, 2021, the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) announced the issuance of a new Telecommunications Operator License to The Global Partnership for Ethiopia, a partnership led by Kenya's Safaricom.

As part of this partnership, Safaricom has registered its local company in Ethiopia as Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC, marking the company's official entry into the Ethiopian market.

According to the ECA, the license is valid for a term of fifteen years, renewable for additional terms of fifteen years subject to fulfillment of all license obligations.

The license was issued to The Global Partnership for Ethiopia, which includes Vodacom Group, Vodafone Group, Sumitomo Corporation, and CDC Group, among others.
