On July 14, 2021, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced that it would retain fuel prices at the same levels as the previous month, providing a reprieve for motorists in Kenya.

Despite the rising cost of crude oil, which had increased to Sh7,880.60 (USD73) per barrel by the time of the announcement, the government decided to slash margins for oil marketing companies instead of passing on the costs to consumers.

As a result, the retail prices of super petrol, diesel, and kerosene remained unchanged in Nairobi, with super petrol selling at Sh127.14 per litre, diesel at Sh107.66, and kerosene at Sh97.85.

The decision to retain fuel prices was made despite the fact that the cost of fuel remains high, with super petrol prices only a few cents shy of the record high of Sh127.8 per litre seen in September 2018.
