Published on July 13, 2021, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has revealed that the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) will operate the Nairobi Expressway for 30 years, including a three-year construction period and a 27-year operation and maintenance period.
According to KeNHA, the CRBC will be granted an outright concession to build, operate, and transfer the project. This means the firm will earn a significant profit from the expressway, estimated to be Sh. 106 billion over 27 years.
Motorists using the road, which will link Mlolongo to the Nairobi-Nakuru highway via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), will pay between $1 (Sh. 109.4) and $15 (Sh. 1,641) depending on the size of their cars and the distance traveled.
The CRBC is also working on another major project in Kenya, the Sh. 474 billion Mombasa-Naivasha standard gauge rail (SGR). The Nairobi Expressway will include a four-lane and six-lane dual carriageway within the existing median of Mombasa Road/Uhuru Highway/Waiyaki Way and 10 interchanges.
