On July 13, 2021, a call was made to coffee farmers in Baringo to form cooperative societies for economic empowerment.
Wildlife Principal Secretary Prof. Fred Segor emphasized that strong societies would enable farmers to save and borrow loans to improve and manage their coffee farms.
During the launch of a Sh85 million coffee factory at Katimok Forest in Ossen-Kabartonjo Ward, Baringo North Sub-county, Prof. Segor urged the county government to support the cooperative societies in all aspects.
Laikipia Governor Nderitu Muriithi and the Head of Coffee Directorate Kenya Isabella Nkonge were in attendance at the opening ceremony of the coffee factory, which was installed courtesy of the county government of Baringo and the Korean Best Friends.
Prof. Segor also appealed to the farmers to grow more coffee trees to ensure sufficient raw materials for the factory and to the county government to consider hiring more agricultural extension officers to train farmers on modern farming techniques and disease control.
