Published on July 13, 2021, Kenya's horticulture exports earnings took a significant hit in the first half of 2021, plummeting to KSh77.1 billion from KSh83.4 billion recorded during the same period the previous year.
Despite a notable increase in export volumes, from 160.9 million kilograms in H1 2020 to 192 million kilograms in H1 2021, the sector's earnings suffered due to the low value of immature produce in the international market.
Fruit export earnings dipped to KSh12 billion, while flower export earnings fetched KSh50 billion, a decline from KSh58.7 billion in the same period last year.
However, vegetable earnings rose to KSh15.1 billion from KSh12.2 billion.
The European Union remains the largest market for Kenyan horticultural exports, accounting for 45% of the exports, which mainly comprise cut flowers, French beans, snow peas, and Asian vegetables.
The leading export destinations include the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Italy, Belgium, France, the Middle East, and the Far East.
