Published on July 13, 2021, police in Kenya have arrested 104 Ethiopians found hiding in a three-bedroom house in Ruiru, Kiambu County, in a joint operation with the Transnational Organised Crime unit.
The Ethiopians, aged between 15 and 40 years, were intercepted by officers from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit led by Kiambu DCIO Dorothy Migarusha.
According to police, the Ethiopians had paid to be transported through the Moyale border, but the exact amount each paid is unclear.
Police said the Ethiopians told them they had paid to be smuggled into Kenya, and the operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking in the region.
Kenya has seen a rise in human trafficking cases, with hundreds of young men and women from Ethiopia finding their way into South Africa through Kenya in search of employment.
Earlier this month, police rescued nine male victims of human trafficking from a house in Kasarani, and on March 30, police rescued eight Eritreans while being smuggled through Kenya to Asia.
