Published on July 12, 2021, Murang'a women representative Sabina Wanjiru Chege has expressed concern over a cult promoting female genital mutilation (FGM) in the region.

Speaking during a public forum convened by the Anti-FGM board in Murang'a, Chege revealed that the cult claims to promote cultural practices but secretly conducts FGM.

She alleged that women who seek advice on matrimonial issues are duped into undergoing the cut, with the procedure being set as a condition for any woman seeking help.

Chege also stated that some women are going to hospitals to have the procedure done, paying medics for it, and that medical records are not filed in the facilities.

She issued a stern warning to medics involved in the practice, saying they will face the law if caught.

“We appreciate our culture but such primitive practices should not be dragged along,” Chege said.

“Female cut is set as one of the conditions for any woman who goes there to seek any help and this is not acceptable,” she added.

“Let us safeguard the dignity of our women and girls by protecting them from such practices,” Chege urged.
