On July 12, 2021, Murang'a women representative Sabina Wanjiru Chege spoke out against a cult promoting female genital mutilation (FGM) in the region.
According to Chege, the cult claims to promote cultural practices but secretly conducts FGM, duping women into undergoing the procedure in exchange for solving their matrimonial issues.
'We appreciate our culture but such primitive practices should not be dragged along,' Chege said during a public forum convened by the Anti-FGM board in Murang'a.
She further alleged that women are being taken to hospitals for the procedure, with medics charging them for the service and failing to keep medical records.
'Women are going to the hospital to have the female genital mutilation done and they are given medicine to go nurse their wounds at home,' Chege added.
She issued a stern warning to the medics involved in this practice, stating that they will face the law if caught.
Earlier, the Anti-FGM board revealed that approximately 26 per cent of women in the Mt. Kenya region have undergone FGM, prompting the board to roll out a massive sensitization program to create awareness about the vice.
