Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has sparked a heated debate in the Mt Kenya region with his recent statements on the region's chances of producing the next president. Speaking during the launch of his book, Beyond Politics, on July 12, 2021, at Serena Hotel, Kiraitu expressed his doubts about the region's ability to retain the presidency.

However, in a surprising twist, Kiraitu rallied the region to back National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for the top seat. Muturi has declared interest to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2022 elections, sparking a double-pronged succession power struggle in the region and at the national level.

During the book launch, Kiraitu described Muturi as a symbol of unity for the entire Gikuyu Embu Meru Association (GEMA) and asked leaders from the populous region to back his ambition for the top seat. He emphasized that the region has done its mathematics and has settled on Muturi, citing his ability to manage the region's divisions.

But not all leaders from the region are in agreement with Kiraitu's stance. A section of influential leaders from Murang'a, Kiambu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, and Laikipia counties have publicly opposed the coronation of Muturi, which was held in quick succession last month.

Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia, who attended the event, questioned Muturi for not involving all leaders from the region in his quest to be their spokesperson. Kimemia also appealed to the political class to rally the region to vote as a bloc instead of splitting it into East and West.

Former powerful Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura also appealed for unity for the region ahead of Uhuru's succession. He emphasized the importance of competition and allowing those who win to lead without antagonizing voters.

Muturi, on the other hand, believes he can do more not just for the GEMA community but for the country as its top leader. He emphasized the need for integrity and discipline in leadership and accountability in governance.
