How Killer Who Used Kangogo Tactics Was Neutralized ¶
On January 1, 2005, a former police reservist, Daniel Cheruyoit, met his end in a hail of bullets after a five-hour shoot-out with police. His reign of terror, which saw him gun down several police officers, had been marked by tactics eerily similar to those employed by fugitive cop Caroline Kangogo.
Cheruyoit's troubles began when he gunned down a corporal in Ruiru, Brian Ogola, in a brazen attack. He then went on to shoot another flying squad officer in Imara Daima, stealing his AK 47 rifle in the process.
As the police launched an intensive investigation to apprehend him, Cheruyoit issued a chilling warning to the police headquarters, threatening to kill officers one by one until they backed off. However, his tactics ultimately led to his downfall when one of his informants revealed his hiding place to the police.
Cheruyoit attempted to trick the police into thinking he was surrendering, but instead fired a shot at one of the flying squad officers who had raided his house. The police, however, were prepared and rained bullets on him, forcing him to flee his hiding place.
Sharpshooters eventually tracked him down and rained bullets on him, forcing him to cry out in pain before eventually succumbing to his injuries.
Cheruyoit's death marked the end of a reign of terror that had seen him become one of the most wanted men in the crime watch division. A Ksh100,000 bounty had been placed on his head, and his search had extended to Uganda and Tanzania.
