Violence among the Borana, Gabra, and Rendille communities in Saku Constituency, Marsabit County, has prompted the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to call for a ceasefire.
On July 12, 2021, NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia announced plans to convene an inter-community peace dialogue in partnership with other stakeholders to resolve simmering tensions.
‘We call upon the residents of Marsabit county and especially Saku constituency to heed our call for a ceasefire and embrace dialogue,’ Kobia stated.
Investigations are underway to bring to book the masterminds of the conflict, which has left over a hundred people dead and displaced thousands of residents since the beginning of the year.
Thousands of livestock have been stolen, and several houses have been torched, affecting learning as schools have been forced to shut down.
As part of measures to de-escalate the inter-community conflicts, the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai, has deployed officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) in Marsabit.
