On 25th February, 2021, the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) reported that it had handled a total of sixty-four matters in the year 2020, despite the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Attorney General Paul Kihara officially opened the training of Judges on Good Governance and the Rule of Law in EAC at the Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi, where he praised the EACJ's efforts in promoting civic space and good governance in the East African Community (EAC).

‘The EACJ has played a very important role in the promotion of civic space as part of the maintenance of good governance and the rule of law that are the bedrock of regional integration,’ said Kihara.

He noted that the EACJ has witnessed a growth in its activities, with the court delivering judgments on various matters. However, he pointed out that there were no mechanisms in place to ensure the implementation of these decisions, unless the beneficiary of the decision returned to court.

Justice Nestor Kayobera, the Judge President of the EACJ, emphasized the importance of proper interpretation and application of the treaty for the establishment of the East Africa Community.

‘As we embark on our judicial journey at EACJ, we will ensure there is proper interpretation and application of the treaty for the establishment of East Africa Community,’ said Kayobera.
