Kenya is gearing up to host the World Athletics Under-20 Championships at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani from August 17-22, and Zenah Jemutai is one of the athletes keen to add to the medal count.

At the national trials held at Kasarani two weeks ago, Jemutai finished second, clocking 8:55.75 seconds behind winner Teresia Muthoni. However, she hopes to improve her performance and take the top spot at the championships.

"I am glad to have qualified, and now the job is to work hard in training and look to be ready for the Championships," Jemutai stated. "I want to improve on my speed, especially in the final lap, which has been my major challenge."

Currently training at the Kapsait Athletics Training Camp in Elgeyo Marakwet, Jemutai has been sharpening her skills alongside world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei and other top athletes.

Despite facing challenges, including switching schools due to the closure of Kapsait Secondary School, Jemutai remains focused on her goal of winning a medal at the championships.

Having participated in the last World U20 Championship in Tampere, Finland, but finishing outside the medal brackets, Jemutai hopes for improvement and a medal around her neck.

"I had a good time running in the 3,000m race at the junior level, and I expect no hindrances in making the podium," Jemutai said. "I will try to use the experience I gained during the World Junior Championships in 2018 in Tampere, Finland. This is a championship, and I need to work hard and deliver a medal for my country."
