On July 8, 2021, a violent incident shook Kiminini market in Trans Nzoia County, leaving Phanice Chemutai Juma seriously injured. The alleged perpetrator, Ken Muyundo, a well-known businessman in Kitale, has since been arraigned in Kitale Law court.
Appearing before Kitale Chief Magistrate Julius Ngarngar, Muyundo pleaded not guilty to the charges of attempted murder and unlawfully wounding. He was released on a cash bail of KES 200,000 or a surety of KES 500,000.
Represented by lawyer Cliff Ombeta, Muyundo's defense team expressed their willingness to explore alternative dispute resolution options. 'Our client is still sick, he pleaded not guilty and after getting court's directives, we are ready to explore any available alternative that will guarantee justice. Out of court settlement is also an option,' Ombeta said.
The case is set to be mentioned on July 28, 2021, for further directions. Phanice Chemutai Juma remains hospitalized at Kitale County Referral Hospital, where she is receiving treatment for her injuries.
