On June 30, 2019, police in Murang'a county arrested approximately 83 individuals who were found participating in a bhang smoking competition.

According to the police commander, John Ondit, the suspects had planned a large gathering in the town of Kenol, where they would compete in the smoking competition.

Those attending the event were required to purchase two sticks of bhang before being allowed into the venue.

Mr. Ondit stated that the police received information from locals that the event was being organized by over 100 young people.

"The public assisted us in arresting 83 individuals who were involved in organizing a large event that included a bhang smoking competition, where each attendee was required to purchase two sticks of bhang before being allowed into the venue. We are working to apprehend others who we know are using illicit substances," Mr. Ondit said.

These arrests come just a month after the court strongly rejected a bill that aimed to legalize the use of illicit substances in the country.
