Haiti's President Jovenel Moise was assassinated on July 7, 2021, at his home in Port-au-Prince, sparking widespread turmoil in the Caribbean nation.

According to Haitian police, they have arrested a 63-year-old Haitian national, Christian Emmanuel Sanon, who flew into the country on a private jet in early June with 'political motives.'

Sanon is believed to be a key suspect in organizing the assassination, which was carried out by a unit of 26 Colombians and two Haitian Americans.

The Colombians and Haitian Americans told investigators that they were there to arrest Moise, not kill him, according to the Miami Herald and a person familiar with the matter.

However, police say that the suspects' claims are not credible, and they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the assassination.

Moise's body was found with multiple bullet wounds, a fractured skull, and other broken bones, underscoring the brutal nature of the attack.

Meanwhile, protests are planned in parts of Port-au-Prince against the interim prime minister and acting head of state, Claude Joseph, who has been challenged by other senior politicians.

Joseph's right to lead the country has been questioned, threatening to exacerbate the turmoil engulfing Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas.
