On July 12, 2021, a spot check by K24 Digital revealed that the University of Nairobi had doubled fees for some of its postgraduate courses and self-sponsored programs in an effort to make ends meet.
The university's cash deficit was attributed to a shortfall in student enrollment, which had resulted in a loss of over Ksh1 billion in fees over three years.
According to the university, only new students joining the school would be affected by the changes in tuition fees.
Undergraduate students sponsored by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) had opposed fees increments, prompting the university to review the tuition fees for postgraduate and self-sponsored students.
Some of the affected courses include medicine, law, engineering, and economics, with fees ranging from Ksh600,000 to over Ksh3 million.
