Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, 22, has been named the Best Goalkeeper at Euro 2020, the tournament that concluded on July 11, 2021.

Donnarumma saved two penalties in the final match against England, helping Italy win the championship after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time.

Italy's victory marked their first Euro title since 1968.

Donnarumma, who played in only three matches during the Euro campaign, outshone England's Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who were expected to take the final penalty shots.

He became the second goalkeeper in Euro history to win the award, following Peter Schmeichel of Denmark in 1992.

Donnarumma was Italy's goalkeeper for 719 minutes during the Euro final and was the only player to be fielded by coach Roberto Mancini in each of the tournament's matches.

"We gave it our all without holding back. We started these campaigns with clear goals in mind. Although we didn't expect this level of success, this is a title we feel we deserved," Donnarumma said.
