On July 1, 2019, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) announced plans to remove camel herders from Kora and Meru National Parks.
According to Bakari Chongwa, Chief Warden in Charge of Meru and Kora National Parks, the operation aims to restore security and order in the areas.
Chongwa warned farmers who have been grazing their livestock inside the game park and nearby reserves that they risk losing their livestock and facing other consequences when the operation begins.
The Kora National Park has been plagued by camel herders who have made the park insecure, particularly after the murder of George Adamson, a renowned lion conservationist, by armed bandits in the park.
Chongwa noted that the park has been a hideout for camel herders who face resistance from Kitui or commit crimes along the border between Kitui and Tana River counties.
