Published on July 11, 2021, a deadly explosion rocked Port Sudan, a city in eastern Sudan, leaving a trail of destruction and loss of life.
Four people were killed in the blast, which occurred at a busy sporting club in the city, according to the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors.
“An explosive device went off at Al-Amir club … killing four people,” the committee said in a statement.
Three others were wounded in the attack, which involved both an explosion and an armed assault, the doctors' committee added.
There was another attempt targeting a hotel in the city, but it failed, the committee said without elaborating on the details.
Port Sudan has been experiencing rising insecurity in recent weeks, with anti-government protesters reportedly blocking roads and causing tensions to simmer.
The Central Committee of Sudan Doctors blamed the incident on “tribal strife” and urged security forces to step in to maintain order.
Sudan has been undergoing a challenging period since the ouster of Islamist president Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, marked by an economic crisis and deepening political division.
