On July 10, 2021, a shooting incident occurred in Kitale, Kenya, involving a businessman and a woman named Phanice Chemutai, who was shot after being allegedly mistaken for fugitive police officer Caroline Kangogo.
Chemutai, a Form Four leaver, had arrived at Kiminini market from her home in Kaptama to help her sister obtain a birth certificate and look for a college to join.
She rented a room for Ksh300, intending to spend the night there with her sister, but was approached by a man in his early 50s, later identified as Ken Muyundo, who had been searching for Caroline Kangogo.
Chemutai claimed that Muyundo had been pestering her with phone calls, despite her telling him she was new in Kiminini town, and that he had even offered her a thousand shillings to excuse herself.
After Muyundo moved from the driver's seat to the passenger side, he shot Chemutai, shouting that she was Caroline Kangogo and that he had been searching for her for a long time.
Chemutai was later taken to Kiminini police station, where she received first aid and a used cartridge was recovered from her pants.
Unverified information suggested that Muyundo and Chemutai had been seen drinking together at a club in Grassland area in the outskirts of Kitale town before proceeding to Kiminini.
Muyundo is expected to appear in court on July 12, 2021.
