Kenya's first toll road, the Nairobi Expressway, is set to revolutionize the capital city's transportation landscape with its expected completion in February 2023, six months ahead of schedule.

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia made the announcement, citing the expressway's 60% completion rate, with the China Roads and Bridges Company (CRBC) working tirelessly to meet the deadline.

Originally slated for completion in September 2022, the Sh63 billion road project has been accelerated to ease traffic congestion on the busy Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way.

“We requested the Ministry of Interior to offer security to the contractor to ensure smooth operations on a 24-hour basis. We are glad they are working in shifts that will see the road completed before schedule,” Macharia said.

The project, which began in June 2020 but was delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions, is expected to reduce travel time from Mlolongo to Rironi near Limuru from over an hour to just 20 minutes.

Once completed, the expressway will feature 11 inter-changes to ease exit and entry, and motorists will be able to drive from Mlolongo to Rironi via the Central Business District and Waiyaki Way.
