Published on July 10, 2021, the Anti-FGM Board has denied claims by a 30-year-old woman from Muranga who alleged her husband forcefully circumcised her.

According to the board, there is no medical evidence to support the woman's claims, which she made to the police station about a month ago.

The woman, who is still recuperating in hospital, claimed that her husband and 10 other people circumcised her, and that her husband is a follower of a cult dubbed Gwata Ndai, which advocates and perpetuates Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

However, the board's chairperson, Agnes Pareyio, stated that the medical report indicates the woman was assaulted, but it is unclear if the assault was intended to circumcise her.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the truth of the incident, and the board has warned those behind the retrogressive behavior of FGM.

Chairperson Pareyio also raised alarm over increased FGM cases in central Kenya, citing a worrying trend among the Kikuyu community, where 26 percent of people prefer FGM.

She emphasized the need for an intensive sanitization program to educate young people on the dangers of FGM, particularly in counties where the practice is prevalent, including Kisii, Maasai, Samburu, and Somali.
